Since inception, the Association has welcomed everyone interested in floodplain management regardless of their location, employment, or whether their special interest is in structural measures, nonstructural measures, environmental issues, legislation, policy, or some other aspect of floodplain management. The members of the Association represent many federal, state and local agencies as well as private firms. One of the great values of the Association is its role in providing a common meeting ground and forum for diverse views.
Member Services
The Association provides a variety of services to its members including:
ANNUAL CONFERENCES The Association hosts one major conference annually. The conferences provide members an opportunity to present and discuss technical papers on various aspects of floodplain management as well as attend presentations by state and federal officials concerning their programs. The conferences also provide an opportunity for members to exchange information with their counterparts, learn about new products and services from vendor displays, and network with other floodplain management professionals.
SPECIALTY SYMPOSIUMS The Association from time to time sponsors technical specialty symposiums on the latest technical and policy issues in floodplain management.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS A number of workshops for managers, engineers and planners are offered each year, such as HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS training, Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) workshop and exam, and many others. Attendees receive CEC credits toward their CFM certification.
WEB SITE The Association web site provides extensive, up-to-date information on upcoming events, membership, job listings, links to other related programs, organizations and agencies, flood related information, conference presentations and various downloadable documents and programs.
NEWSLETTER The Association newsletter, published online quarterly, includes information on new publications, upcoming events, calls for papers, and other useful topics. In addition, the newsletter carries a wide range of articles on floodplain management including some written especially for the newsletter and others culled from articles appearing in other newsletters and magazines.
TECHNICAL COMMITTEES Association members are invited to participate in various committees, including: the Professional Development Committee that plans professional workshops each year; the Outreach Committee serving as liaison to other professional associations; the Newsletter Committee assisting in developing the technical content of the newsletter; and, the Awards Committee selecting award recipients. Other committees are formed at the suggestions of members each year.
AWARDS PROGRAM The Association sponsors an active awards program to recognize individuals, firms and agencies for their performance in the field of floodplain management. Awards include the following: Media Award, Legislator of the Year, Floodplain Manager of the Year, Project of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Goddard Award. SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES The Association provides opportunities for a wide range of sponsorship categories to maximize marketing and business development efforts by its members. These include newsletter advertisements, web site sponsorship and conference sponsorship.
