2D HEC-RAS Workshop

January 10-12, 2017

City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Engineering

1149 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90015 (12 CECs for CFMs)

This intensive 3-day workshop prepares water resources professionals to use the HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System) for modeling two-dimensional (2D) unsteady flow applications. Participants will learn how to approach and construct a 2D model for unsteady flow conditions, and to effectively view and analyze results.

Martin J. Teal, P.E., P.H., D.WRE, is a Vice President of WEST Consultants. He has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of hydraulics, hydrology and sediment transport and has been involved in many river and floodplain studies. He is a frequent instructor of short courses for ASCE Continuing Education and others. Mr. Teal is a registered Professional Engineer in California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii; a certified Professional Hydrologist, and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and his M.S. in Civil Engineering (Hydraulics) from the University of Iowa.

James Heyen, P.E., CFM is a senior hydraulic engineer and project manager with WEST Consultants with over 16 years of experience in water resources and hydraulic engineering. His areas of technical expertise include 1D- and 2D- hydraulic analysis and scour potential assessments. Mr. Heyen earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona, and his M.S. in Civil Engineering (Water Resources Engineering) from Oregon State University. He has been a regular instructor of HEC-RAS courses and provided technical support for HEC-RAS since 2007.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Consulting engineers, water resource planners, engineers employed by local, state, or federal government agencies. Participants should have some experience in floodplain hydrology and hydraulics, and sound experience in HEC-RAS steady and unsteady flow computer modeling.

¨       Learn to use HEC-RAS to model 2D unsteady flow hydraulics.

¨       Get an overview of 2D flow theory and the differences between it and one-dimensional modeling.

¨       Gain hands-on HEC-RAS experience by participating in practical computer workshops.

¨       Understand how to develop a stable and calibrated 2D flow model.

¨       Obtain valuable insights in methods for minimizing computation errors and instabilities for 2D unsteady hydraulic models.

¨       Learn from “real world” projects and applications.
