2D HEC-RAS Workshop

This intensive 3-day workshop prepares water resources professionals to use the HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System) for modeling two-dimensional (2D) unsteady flow applications. Participants will learn how to approach and construct a 2D model for unsteady flow conditions, and to effectively view and analyze results.


Raymond Walton, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE is the lead Hydraulic Engineer in the Bellevue, Washington, Office of WEST Consultants.  He has over 40 years of experience directing water resources studies throughout the U.S. and abroad.  He is a nationally-recognized expert in multi-dimensional modeling of surface water, groundwater and water quality systems.  In 2010, he was recognized as the outstanding Professional Engineer in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State.  Dr. Walton has developed and applied multi-dimensional models throughout his career for estuarine, wetland and riverine hydrodynamics, and has modeled over 50 sites, including Chesapeake Bay and Humboldt Bay.  He has applied HEC-RAS to several thousand stream miles, including the Columbia River and Snake River.  He was an Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University, taught P.E. review classes at the University of Washington, and has taught HEC-RAS classes for nearly two decades for ASCE and other groups, including steady flow, unsteady flow, dam break, and 2D modeling.

Om Prakash, Ph.D., P.E., is a senior hydraulic engineer in WEST’s Folsom office with more than 15 years of local and international engineering experience. His activities include working on multi-dimensional hydraulic modeling, floodplain modeling, flood impact analysis, hydrodynamic and watershed modeling, reservoir operation and sedimentation analysis, sediment transport modeling, water quality modeling, hydroelectric project design and operation, and design and analysis of surge and transient systems, irrigation networks, storm water drainage systems, water supply distribution systems, cross-drainage works, spillways and flood control structures. Dr. Prakash recently led a complex multi-dimensional floodplain modeling effort on the San Joaquin River. He is currently completing a peer review for the California Department of Water Resources of HEC-RAS and HEC-ResSim modeling for the Yuba-Feather River system and Tuolumne River. Dr. Prakash has assisted in several HEC-RAS 2D courses, and also taught several graduate courses, including HEC-RAS, during his doctoral program.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Consulting engineers, water resource planners, engineers employed by local, state, or federal government agencies. Participants should have some experience in floodplain hydrology and hydraulics, and sound experience in HEC-RAS steady and unsteady flow computer modeling.
