Professional Development

Professional Development activities of FMA include conferences; luncheon programs in Sacramento, San Diego, and the Bay Area; CFM certification of flood plain managers; and various courses throughout the year.

FMA hosts workshops, symposiums, and one major Conference annually. The conferences provide members an opportunity to present and discuss technical papers on various aspects of floodplain management as well as attend presentations by state and federal officials concerning their programs. The conferences also provide an opportunity for members to exchange information with their counterparts, learn about new products and services from vendor displays, and network with other floodplain management professionals.

Luncheon Programs

FMA organizes luncheons in Sacramento, San Diego, and the Bay Area on a variety of topics relating to floodplain management. To see the topic, speaker, and logistics, see:

CFM® Certification

The Association of State Flood Plain Managers (ASFPM), of which FMA is a chapter, has established a national program for professional certification of floodplain managers. The program recognizes continuing education and professional development that enhance the knowledge and performance of local, state, federal, and private-sector floodplain managers. Certified Floodplain Managers (CFMs) receive continuing education credits at FMA workshops, symposiums, and conferences in order to meet annual education credit requirements.

The many benefits of being a CFM include:

  • Professional credibility
  • Standards of a nationally-recognized program
  • Confidence that the information is true and accurate
  • Networking in a community of others professionals who speak the same language
  • Sense of belonging / comraderie

For more information about the CFM program including who can qualify as a CFM and the steps to becoming a CFM, please visit ASFPM's Certified Floodplain Manager Program Information page.
